Strut Your Mutt on October 20!

It’s coming up! Are you and your dog ready?

Strut Your Mutt, a free Halloween parade for dogs only, will be taking place in Brookdale Park, on Saturday, October 20, at 10 AM (registration begins at 9:30).  Dog owners are encouraged to dress up their dogs and compete for prizes in a variety of categories. Consider yourself invited by Joe DiVincenzo himself, along with some other county officials. Here’s what Joe had to say before last year’s event:

“The Canine Costume Parades are growing into a favorite Halloween celebration for everyone to enjoy. Whether you own a dog or not, I invite you to come see creative costumes worn by dogs of all breeds.”

If you can’t make it to the park that early, there’s an afternoon parade at the Essex County South Mountain Dog Park, with registration beginning at 1:15 and the parade commencing at 2.

For pics from last year’s parade, check out Baristanet’s coverage here.

For more info, check out the county page, which has a link to a poster for the event.

Hope to see you there!

Clover and Abra Are Mad

Clover is mad because Mommy never posted her picture here. Abra is mad because Mommy has been lazy in keeping up with her website. I am not mad. Mommy is OK. She gave me some meatloaf yesterday. I hope she gives me some today.

Oh, here is Clover. She was all right. She took the best part of the couch every time.

Dog Park Closed Thursday August 23

We saw the sign up yesterday and thought to inquire. Here is the email response we received:

Ms. Furnari:

The County Executive forwarded your e-mail and asked me to respond.

On Thursday, August 23rd, the Brookdale Dog Park will be closed for maintenance, so we can pull weeds, cut grass, etc. We apologize for the inconvenience.

No word on how many hours this will take, but forewarned is forearmed.

“Talk and Walk” on August 30th

On Thursday August 30th  from 7 to 8 PM, Davis Chiropractic Health and Wellness of Montclair and Holistic Pet Care of Little Falls will  present a free Health and Wellness Education program, “We’ve Got Your Back” – How Chiropractic Benefits You and Your Pet, at the Brookdale Park Dog Park.

Buster and Floyd relax outside the dog park

Tracey Diamond, life long dog owner and Community Relations Director for Davis Chiropractic, admits she has been brainstorming ways to bring chiropractic and veterinary care together. As a pet owner, she knew veterinarians’ work a day posture created aches and pains while caring for pets.  She also knew that pet owners lift their pets, bend over to bathe them, and get pulled during daily walks. She believed there was something that her office could do to help and continuously thought about the best ways to reach out.

One day, while walking with her boyfriend Todd in Brookdale Park Dog Park with their Wheaton terrier Buster and Cockapoo Floyd, she witnessed a dog suddenly “pull and drag” his owner after the dog sighted a squirrel.  A light bulb went off in her head. The idea for Talk and Walk, set in our own Brookdale Park Dog Park, was born.

Partnering with Davis Chiropractic is Holistic Pet Care of Little Falls, led by Dr. Gerald M. Buchoff.  Tracey met Jodie Joseph, a member of his staff, at their booth at a street fair and was impressed by their services, noting that the office recommends chiropractic care for dogs, along with other holistic practices. It was a perfect partner for her office for this event.

The concept of Talk and Walk, Tracey explains, is “to have a group of people and their dogs get together at the dog park to learn about how to take care of human bodies, with good posture while walking, bathing, and lifting our pets.  Care of the bodies of our pets, with their their posture strains, and ailment relief, will be discussed through Holistic Pet Care.”

Talk and Walk promises to be a fun and informative time at the place where we all love to go – the Brookdale Park Dog Park.  “It is a free event open to the public where we ask everyone to keep their dogs leashed during the discussion.  Then afterwards, people can go ahead to the dog park itself to play or walk the park at their own leisure and pace,” says Tracey.

And who doesn’t like to show off their dogs and meet other people who love their dogs just as much?  Adds Tracey, “As chiropractors and veterinarians that offer chiropractic care, we are all about providing holistic methods to living with great health.  That is what this event is all about.”
